Sri Lanka (EN)

So here I am, using the wifi (limited at present, due to some nursing stsudents watching Made in Chelsea over and over again and eating up our allowance for the month) in Kandy, Sri Lanka, in the Work the World house, monsoon rain pouring outside, thunder and lighning and I'm very happy :) I'm doing my elective here for 5 weeks.

I had my first day in the hospital today. I had some worries because the student nurses complained about doing very little work and coming home after 2-3 hours every day which is certainly not what I have been looking for and not what I had been told. Luckily, it's very different for me, I'll be busy as ever in an outpatients department and will do full days. I already assessed a patient today, observed and assisted with some treatments and the physios tested my knowledge within the first half hour or so :P "This child has torticollis, do you know what it is?" I gave the answer (I do actually know thank god) "Good. What is the function of the sternocleidomastoid?" "How do you treat torticollis?" - luckily this wasn't the most difficult condition they could have asked but oh my, time to revise!!

About Sri Lanka. People smile a lot and they are really curious and genuine. I get a lot of looks in the hospital where i'm the only student physio and the only white person and 2 heads taller than most people... Everybody is kind and helpful though and the department is not as much of a shocker as I thought it would be. I have heard about poor hygiene and limited resources in hospitals but physios have a few taps with soap, I wash my hands between every patient, there are cubicles and privacy, more electrotherapy devices than I had seen on any placement (ultrasound, shortwave, infrared, interferential...) and they make do with what they have, like there is an instrument that patients use to do passive arm movements, freeing up time for the physio to look after someone else in the meanwhile.

Ok, this post really shouldn't be about physio!

About Sri Lanka!
- You can't leave the balcony door open if you leave the room because the monkeys will come in and chew your stuff and drink your perfume.
- Gekkos run really fast on the wall and hide very efficiently.
- Tuk-tuks are a lot more comfortable than one would imagine.
- It's really not that hot - or else I'm frozen to the bone from my time in Aberdeen. I do see people sweat just by standing around but I'm yet to break a sweat. The only time I did suffer a bit was when I walked through town but that was due to the petrol fumes more than heat or humidity.
- You have to watch your feet, there could be a dog lying around ANYWHERE.
- The place is just amazing with lush green vegetation and clouds hanging over the hill - went to a pub where the view was stunningly stunning. The only time I didn't have my camera with me :/

I went to see Kandyan Dance tonight, I'll upload videos when there is more bandwidth and planning to go to climb Adam's Peak this weekend - 7 km of stairs that people climb at night to watch the sunrise up there. It's a pilgrimage :) Might also go whale watching and turtle watching and dolphin watching this weekend, we'll need to plan it though how to do so much in one weekend.

That's it for now, I'll post more in May :)

Sri Lanka!

Docog az internet itt Kandyban, kint szakad a monszun-eso, mar erzem a ma esti curry illatat es igen jol erzem magam :)
2. a fiziok mindenhol jo fejek :)
Megyek vacsorazni, most csak annyit, hogy

- a gekkok irto gyorsan futnak a falon es ugy elbujnak, hogy le se tudom oket fotozni (azert egyszer sikerult)

- a labad ele kell nezni a varosban, mert BARHOL fekhet egy kutya
- a tuk-tuk meglepoen kenyelmes
